In the run-up to this year's European Stroke Organization Conference in Basel, a public event will be held on the topic "Stroke - what comes after? Why Switzerland needs a patient organization".

In 2024, the SNS will award two prizes worth CHF 5,000 each for scientific work in clinical research and in applied basic/translational research in the field of neuroscience.

The 4th Symposium Interprofessional Neurology: NeuroCare will take place on Thursday, 6 June 2024, as part of the Joint Annual Meeting of the SNS at the Congress Center Basel. The symposium is aimed at all carers and therapists who are interested in specialist neurological topics.

Today, on February 29, 2024, the International Rare Disease Day is observed worldwide to raise awareness about rare diseases and show solidarity with people affected by these often under-researched and misunderstood conditions.

The SAMS is awarding the Stern-Gattiker Prize for the fourth time. This honours women in academic medicine and is intended to motivate young female scientists. The prize is endowed with CHF 15,000. It is named after two female doctors: Lina Stern, the first female professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Geneva, and Ruth Gattiker, one of the first female professors at the Faculty of Medicine in Zurich.

Prof. Barbara Tettenborn will take over the presidency of the Highly Specialised Medicine Committee on 19 April 2024. Among other things, the specialist body defines the quality requirements that hospitals must fulfil in order to receive a service mandate in highly specialised medicine (HSM). Barbara Tettenborn succeeds Prof. em. Martin Fey, who has chaired the specialist body since March 2017.

If you ask doctors why they chose their profession, the answer is usually "To help people." This is confirmed by representative surveys. In fact, doctors throughout Switzerland care for their patients every day - and thus form an important pillar of society.

The annual meeting of the Swiss Neurological Society (SNS) will take place in Basel from 06-07 June 2024, together with the two guest societies Swiss League Against Epilepsy SEL and Swiss Society for Behavioural Neurology SSBN. The motto of the conference is: Quo vadis Neuroinflammation? From pathophysiological advances to new treatment strategies.

At the SNS General Assembly during the joint annual meeting of the SNS and SGNC, Prof. Dr. med. Urs Fischer was elected as the new SNS President.

The Rare Disease Action Forum (RDAF) would like to draw attention to the fact that the planned revision to the Health Insurance Ordinance (HIO) is a threat to healthcare provision for patients with rare diseases and is therefore not constructive. Patients without satisfactory alternative treatment options should still be able to access drugs that are not available or reimbursed in Switzerland.

For the first time ever, the Research Recognition Award from the Swiss League Against Epilepsy has gone to two projects headed up by women. Both are young scientists – one from Lausanne, the other from Geneva. Their projects investigate the use of scientific methods to improve the diagnosis of status epilepticus and of non-epileptic seizures to enable more targeted treatment. The award is worth CHF 25,000 in total.
