Specialist examination

You must pass the specialist examination to obtain the specialist neurology qualification. The examination is conducted by the Swiss Neurological Society’s Examination Board.

It consists of three parts, with examinations taking place in two sessions:

  1. Written part (session 1) MC questions
  2. Structured oral part (session 2 (A))
  3. Practical part (session 2 (B))

2023 examinations

Part 1

Written examination – multiple choice examination in English

Location: Inselspital – Bern University Hospital, Institute of Pathology, E Rossi Lecture Hall, Bern
Time and date: Friday, 25 August 2023 (2:30 pm to 6:30 pm)

Part 2

Oral/practical examination

Location: Inselspital – Bern University Hospital
Date: Friday, 3 November 2023, individual times


Criteria

Admission requirements

From 1 January 2010, only doctors with a federal or FOPH-recognised international medical diploma are being admitted to the specialist examination (Art. 23 of the Further Training Regulation). The transitional provisions are set out in Art. 69 para. 3 of the Further Training Regulation.

It is advisable to take the specialist examination following completion of or in the last year of the regulatory further training. The written part can be taken earlier. Please note, however, that the structured oral and practical part must be completed within three years of the written examination (further education programme neurology specialist 4.5.1).

The following documents must be uploaded too:

  • Further training curriculum
  • List of previous further training, in PDF form and signed by the current head of the further training institution. Content of this list: Paper start and end date | Duration of the paper (in months) | Name of the hospital | Department | Name and FMH qualification of supervisor
  • Copy of the federal medical diploma or FOPH-recognised international medical diploma (confirmation of recognition by MEBEKO)
  • For registrations for the oral/practical examination only: Confirmation of successfully passing the neurology written examination

Examination fees

For the written and oral/practical examinations

  • Members of the Swiss Association of Young Neurologists (SAYN) since May 2020 or earlier: CHF 1,500.00
  • Members of the Swiss Association of Young Neurologists (SAYN) from June 2020 or later: CHF 2,250.00
  • Non-members: CHF 2,250.00

Written exam only or oral/practical exam only

  • Members of the Swiss Association of Young Neurologists (SAYN) since May 2020 or earlier: CHF 800.00
  • Members of the Swiss Association of Young Neurologists (SAYN) from June 2020 or later: CHF 1,125.00
  • Non-members: CHF 1,125.00

An invoice for payment of the examination fees will be sent by the end of June 2023 at the latest.
