Two deans, two perspectives – neurology meets medical faculty leadership

In an inspiring conversation moderated by Prof. Dr. med. Caroline Pot (President of the SNG) and Prof. Dr. med. Urs Fischer (Past President of the SNG), two medical deans with a background in neurology come together: Prof. Dr. med. Claudio Bassetti from Bern and Prof. Dr. med. Renaud Du Pasquier from Lausanne.
They share their experiences as deans of the medical faculties in Bern and Lausanne and reflect on how their neurological training shapes their leadership style. Precise analysis, interconnected thinking and the careful weighing of complex situations are skills they consider essential not only in clinical practice but also in leading a faculty.
They also discuss the current challenges facing medical faculties in Switzerland, including the management of limited resources, the need for more flexible study models and the targeted support of individual career paths. On one point, they fully agree: close collaboration across disciplinary boundaries, along with the consistent integration of digitalization and artificial intelligence into medical education, is crucial to sustainably meet the high demands of future healthcare.
A compelling conversation offering valuable insights into leadership, teaching and the future of medical education – well worth watching.
